Nigerian Tertiary Education System 2022
The Nigerian Higher education system is divided into three (3) higher institutions which are:
- The University
- The Polytechnic
- Colleges
1. University Education
University education in Nigeria is for those that wish to acquire a bachelor’s degree after their high school (secondary school) or diploma.
The Nigerian University Education takes about 3 to 6 years for completion (including Industrial Trainings) depending on the course you choose. All Universities in Nigeria are regulated by the National University Commission (NUC).

2. Polytechnic Education
Polytechnic education in Nigeria is basically for those that wish to acquire an Ordinary National Diploma (OND) or a Higher National Diploma (HND) after their high school (secondary school).
The Nigerian Polytechnic Education 2 years for the completion of an Ordinary National Diploma (OND) and 4 years for completion of the Higher National Diploma (HND) with a 6 months Industrial Training each.

3. College Education
College education system in Nigeria was originally for students that wish to acquire a National Certificate of Education (NCE) but recently, the scope of Nigerian Colleges has expand beyond education courses.
Available Colleges in Nigeria include College of education, College of health sciences, College of Technologies, etc.
Most programmes in Nigerian Colleges mostly last for 2 to 3 years (including intensive industrial trainings).

To apply for admission into any Nigerian University, Polytechnic or College you must meet the criteria and have all the required documents as required by the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB)
The following are the necessary and compulsory requirements to gain admission into any University, Polytechnic or College in Nigeria in 2022:
- A JAMB score that meets your School’s cut off mark
- O’level result (Secondary School/High school result)
- Appropriate subject combination for the course applied for.
- A Diploma or A’level equivalent (for direct entry applicants only)
- Minimum 3.5GPA (for transfer students only)
- Minimum age requirement of 16 years
Documents Required for Admission in Nigeria.
- Original JAMB result
- O’level Result (WAEC, NECO, or GCE) Certificate
- Certificate of Local Government Area of Origin
- Age declaration or Birth certificate
- A recommendation letter or Attestation letter
Admission Requirements in Nigeria for International Students
If you are an international student (any student who is not a Nigerian) that wishes to apply for admission into a Nigerian university, you will need the following requirements:
- JAMB Exam
- A high school diploma or equivalent
- International Passport

How to Gain Admission in Nigeria 2022
If you are asking how you can gain admission in Nigeria easily, then here are the simple steps on how to gain admission into any Nigerian University, Polytechnic or College.
Step 1: Entrance Exam
Firstly, the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) exam is a compulsory exam for all national and international students that wish to study in Nigeria.
The JAMB examination is held every year and each year’s result is only valid for that year’s admission (meaning JAMB results are valid for one year).
Any candidates that are not given admission within the same year of the JAMB exam will have to reapply and re-sit for JAMB to be eligible for admission the next year.
JAMB registration costs a total fee of four thousand seven hundred Naira (N4,700) only. Where N3,500 is for JAMB pin and form and N700 for CBT registration process and N500 for JAMB compulsory novel usually used for JAMB Use of English.

After the JAMB exam, the candidate will then have to follow the procedures below to apply and gain admission in any University, Polytechnic or College of his or her choice.

Step 2: Choice of Institution:
During the JAMB registration, the student will be given the chance to choose four different institutions as first choice, second choice, third and fourth choice.
Importantly, the student must make sure to choose his desired university as his or her first choice.

Step 3: Choice of Course and Subject Combination:
The student has the privilege of selecting four (4) different courses within his field of study and the applicant’s subject combination must be suitable for the selected courses.

Admission Procedures into Nigerian Institutions 2022
What is the process of admission in Nigeria? The following are the step-by-step process for admission into any Nigerian institution.
Note: all Nigerian higher institutions follow these steps shown below for their admission process.
Step 1: JAMB Entrance Exam
All students that are willing to study in Nigeria must register and take part in the Nigerian Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB).
Step 2: Application for Post UTME
After writing and obtaining a qualifying score in the JAMB exam, the candidate will then have to apply for the Post UTME Screening of his desired/chosen institution.
Step 3: Awaiting Admission
After the Post UTME screening exercise, the applicants must have to wait for the admission list to be released.
Step 4: Checking Admission Status:
While waiting for the admission list, the applicant can monitor his or her admission progress via the JAMB CAPS portal.
If the applicant is admitted on JAMB CAPS, he or she will have a two weeks period to accept the admission.
Step 5: Release of Admission List:
After the steps above, the applicant will have to wait till the school finally release its merit and supplementary admission list.
Note: the school’s admission list will only contain the names of all the applicants that have accepted their names on the JAMB CAPS Portal.
Step 6: Printing of Admission Letter:
After the applicant has received a notification of admission, such applicant will then have to print his or her JAMB Admission letter.
Step 7: Payment of Acceptance Fee
The newly admitted student will have to pay a non-refundable acceptance fee as stipulated by the school (this fee might be scrapped by the Federal Government).
Step 8: New Students’ Registration
After the payment of the acceptance fee, the student will then have to complete the new student’s registration and clearance.
Step 9: Matriculation:
After the above steps, all the newly admitted students will have to partake in matriculation where they will be issued a Matric Number (Registration Number).
Step 10: Payment of Fees
All newly admitted students will then have to use their registration number (Matriculation number) to pay their stipulated school fees.
Step 11: Resumption of Lectures
After completing the above steps and processes, the student will officially become a bonafide member of the school.
At that stage, the student will be qualified for orientations, lectures, and other activities within the school.
Step 12: Graduation
For a student to be qualified for graduation in a Nigerian university, the student must complete all his or her courses and the number of years assigned for his program.
At the end of such a program, the student must obtain at least a 1.0 GPA or 1.5 GPA depending on the school.
Step 13: Youth Service
At the end of the program, the student will have to apply and go for a one-year Nigerian Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to render selfless and voluntary services to the public.
Step 14: Convocation
Convocation is the last stage in any Nigerian university undergraduate education system. This is the ceremony where the student will receive certification for the completion of studies.
