What is the Reason for ASUU Strike 2022?

ASUU strike had been one of the most heard-off actions in the Nigerian University System. It’s obvious that the Nigerian Universities under ASUU rarely operate for a full year without strike industrial action.

Meanwhile, the main cause of the recent outbreak of strike industrial action by ASUU is because of the Federal Government inability to fulfill their promises to the Union.

According to the Union statement “the Union is continuously pressing home their demands for the continuous survival of public university system in Nigeria”.

New Agreement Between ASUU and Federal Government

The leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) had in the recent development met with the Federal Government to avert the ongoing ASUU strike by the university lecturers.

Considerably, many meetings have been held in the presence of the ASUU President, the Education and Labour Ministers, and ministers and leaders of other relevant government agencies.

The Minister of Labour, Chris Ngige, on 29th July 2022 said that negotiations were ongoing between the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the Ministry of Education.

He also added that, negotiating with ASUU without doing so with the other unions within the university-system will only delayed the strike as it would not achieve a quick solution.

Chris Ngige made this known on Thursday, during a press briefing to commemorate the 2022 World Day Against Child Labour in Abuja.
