What JAMB score is Considered to be a low JAMB score?

Is my score actually a low JAMB score?

This is the big question, you are asking as you read this.

Is your score truly a low score or it’s just considered to be low because of the school and the course you are applying for?

The fact that your score doesn’t meet up with the cut off mark of the institution the institution or course that you were aspiring doesn’t make it a low JAMB score.

How to know if your JAMB Score is low?

There are so many factors to be considered before terming a JAMB score to be either low or high. The first factor to be considered is the course you are applying for.

For instance, applying for a course like medicine with a JAMB score of 230 is considered to be low because of how competitive Medicine and surgery is.

In the same vein, applying for a course like Botany with the same score of 230 is considered to be a high score because Botany is not a competitive course.

But generally, based on JAMB statistics for this year, a low JAMB score is any score lower than 140, because that’s the benchmark for university admission through JAMB.

But the good news is that you can still secure admission into a university, polytechnic or college even with a low JAMB score and this is pretty cool.

You can secure admission with 120, 130, 140, 150, 160, 170 or anything below 180, and the rest. All you need to do is sit back, take a glass of chill water and read this carefully..

How to Gain Admission with a Low JAMB Score in 2022

Let me start by listing out the steps to gaining admission with low JAMB score. Make sure you scroll down to read the full details about each of the steps and how to go about them.

The 6 simple ways to  gain admission with a low JAMB score are;

  1. Apply to a school that write Post UTME
  2. Change to a less competitive University
  3. Apply for a less Competitive Course
  4. Consider a private university
  5. Go for Basics/Pre-degree programs
  6. Apply to a polytechnic
  7. Choose a Catchment School

Recommended:

1. Apply to a school that write Post UTME

Just make sure you pass your Post UTME with a high score: Yes, even with a low JAMB score, you can gain admission if you scored higher in post utme.

This method could be applicable to only candidates who attained the minimum JAMB cut off mark of their desired institution and probably didn’t make it up to the departmental cut off mark.

Most universities take a total percentage of 50% for JAMB and 50% for post UTME, hence the chances of securing admission isn’t totally dependent on your JAMB score and this is like a narrow escape.. Congratulations in advance!!

2. Change to a Less Competitive University

Apply to a less competitive institution: Some universities have a lot of applicants with high JAMB scores, and will likely not deny applicants with a high JAMB score for applicants with a low JAMB score.

It’s quite Unfortunate that you can’t gain admission into a competitive institution with a low JAMB score, so it’s advice able you do a change of institution to a less competitive institution.

I’ll urge you to check the cut off mark for the institution you earlier applied for, if the difference between the cut off mark and your score is quite obvious, please do not hesitate to do change the institution, and this time the institution shouldn’t be a competitive one.

3. Apply for a less Competitive Course:

YES! This is another good option, all hope is not lost because there is another way out. You can increase your chances of gaining admission with a low JAMB score by changing your course.

The bitter truth is this; just as you wouldn’t be admitted in a competitive institution with a low JAMB score, the same is applicable to a competitive course because you might not be given admission into a competitive course with low JAMB score.

Note: there are so many shortcomings or discomfort that may likely come as a result of your being bent on studying with a low JAMB score as you might not study your dream course again.

Meanwhile, making a proper exploration, you might discovered a course that is less competitive but more interesting and marketable and better than the first course you choose. Hence, apply for a less competitive course.

4. Consider a private university

Many private universities accept candidates with low JAMB scores because they do not have a great number of applicants.

About 70% of JAMB candidates choose public and state universities while leaving behind private universities, maybe because of the cost of studying in them.

So considering to change from a public university to a private institution could be a better alternative, as you might still be given opportunity to study your dream course even with a low JAMB score.

5. Go for Basics/Pre-degree programs

To add to the list, applying for admission through IJMB or JUPEB makes it very easy to gain admission into some Nigerian universities. You can choose to apply for either JUPEB or IJMB, or NABTEB.

If you are applying for any of this programs, you may not need to change your course, as you can be admitted to study that course in your dream school.

Many universities in Nigeria also have special basics studies programs that can qualify you for admission into your dream course which will qualify you to start from level 200.

You can go for a pre-degree or basics studies program with or without a JAMB score. If you undergo any of the above listed programs and succeed you will be automatically given a direct entry admission into 200 level into your desired course.

6. Apply to a Polytechnics:

Interestingly most polytechnics in Nigeria offer almost every course offered in the University. Also, polytechnics do not have high cut off marks as compared to universities.

Gaining admission into a Nigerian polytechnic is far easier than gaining admission into a Nigerian university. Currently, JAMB has set polytechnic cut off mark to 1200.

Check out: JAMB New Cut off mark for all Polytechnics

All you need to do is to search for any polytechnic of your choice, check if the polytechnic offers your dream course and then apply.

7. Choose a Catchment School

Catchment areas in Nigerian universities admissions refer to the states that have been set out by the Federal Government for easy admission into a Federal University. They’re mostly considering Education Less Developed States (ELDS).

This implies that, candidates from catchment states have more advantage of gaining admission into some federal universities, if the federal government has specified the state to be among the catchment states.

In conclusion:

Gaining admission with a low JAMB score can be so discomforting, discomforting in the sense that you might not get your desired course, you might not study in your desired institution with a low JAMB score.

You might even spend a year or two in pre-degree programs before you will be finally admitted.

So aspirants and candidates with low JAMB score should be open to accept their fate. But the good news is that, there is a remedy to your low JAMB score.
