The 2022 JAMB area of concentration for English is base on the syllabus that JAMB will set Use of English questions from.

Interestingly, the JAMB area of concentration for use of English is divided into three sections as shown below:

  1. Reading and Summary of Comprehension Passages
  2. Lexis and structure
  3. Oral forms

At the end of using this JAMB Use of English syllabus, candidates should be able to:

  • Read given comprehensive passages and identify main points in the passages.
  • Identify the grammatical functions of words used in the passage
  • Identify the phrases, clauses, figurative, and idiomatic expressions, ordinary, and idiomatic contexts used in the passage
  • Point out the writer’s intentions.
  • Identify the writer’s mood and attitude to the subject matter.
  • Identify the synonyms and antonyms of some words used in the passage.
  • Interpret information conveyed in sentences.
  • Make distinctions between different types of vowel
  • Differentiate between different types of consonant.
  • Identify correct accentuation in words and connected speech.

Use of English Comprehension/Summary Syllabus

The first section of the English syllabus is on comprehension and summary of written passages. Below is the breakdown of the use of English comprehension and summary syllabus.

Comprehension Passage:

  • Argumentation/persuasion

Area of Concentration:

  • Two different passages will be used
  • Each of the passages will be set from different stories.
  • One of the passages will be a cloze test.
  • The other passage will reflect various disciplines
  • Each passage will be about 200 words long.
